Dear Sixth Grade Parents and Students,

I am looking forward to a very productive year.  In order to achieve this goal, we must all work together (teacher, student, and parent).  I want you to be aware of my methods of teaching as this year begins.  The four main areas of importance are class participation, math binder (rule book), tests/quizzes, and homework.

Each student is required to participate in every activity.  Students will work in cooperative teams and independently at their desks.  They will also be sent to the board to drill and practice. In order to participate fully these supplies will be needed daily: binder with paper (which includes the Rule Book), a pencil, calculator, and grading pen.

Every week students will take  a test. Sixth grade math tests are scheduled for Fridays. These evaluations will cover not only the material for the week, but also previously taught skills. My goal is for them to master and retain these skills.

On Thursdays we will also take a timed multiplication test. As soon as a score of 100% is earned, it will be posted in the gradebook.  If students do not earn a 100% by the end of the nine weeks, whatever is scored on the last timed test of that nine weeks will be recorded as a test grade.

Math homework will be assigned Monday through Thursday nights.  At the start of each nine weeks, students will begin with a grade of 100% for homework.  Homework is a weighted grade. As long as the assignment is completed nightly and all work is shown, this grade will stay 100%. Students will lose 5 points if the homework is not turned in or is incomplete.  These assignments will be posted in the room and are available through REMIND texts.

Extra credit is available weekly.  Every Monday, I will return Friday's test to the students. To earn five extra points, all that is required is for the test to be signed by a parent and returned to me on Tuesday. That is an easy 40 extra points that can be earned each nine weeks!

Communication among parents, teachers, and students is paramount to student success.  Please make sure that you and your child sign up for Remind updates that can be received via text. (Information for signing up for Remind will be sent home with your student on the first day of school and is available in my room throughout the year. If that information does not reach you, please email me, and I will send it to you.)

It is my goal for each child to leave sixth grade with a greater knowledge and love of math. With your help, we will reach that goal.

Thank you,

Mrs. C. McCool--Sixth Grade Math Teacher
